Environmental factors and host genetic variation shape the fungal endophyte communities within needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)

چکیده

To determine the role of environmental and host genetic factors in shaping fungal endophyte communities we used culturing metabarcoding techniques to quantify taxa within healthy Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) needles a 7-y old provenance-progeny trial replicated at three sites. Both methods revealed community ascomycete basidiomycete dominated by needle pathogen Lophodermium seditiosum. Differences taxon composition diversity indices were highly significant among Within two sites, varied significantly provenances. Furthermore, differed maternal families provenances 11/15 7/15 comparisons involving culture data respectively. We conclude that both variation shape P. sylvestris needles.

Seasonal variation in the reflectance of photosynthetically active radiation from epicuticular waxes of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) needles

Epicuticular waxes influence leaf reflectance, but the spatiotemporal dynamics in their reflectance properties have not been properly characterized, and its consequences remain unknown. In this study, we analysed the seasonal changes in wax reflectance of Scots pine needles. It tended to decrease with needle age and towards lower positions within the canopy. In addition, we also identified a cl...

Fungal Infection Increases the Rate of Somatic Mutation in Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.).

Somatic mutations are transmitted during mitosis in developing somatic tissue. Somatic cells bearing the mutations can develop into reproductive (germ) cells and the somatic mutations are then passed on to the next generation of plants. Somatic mutations are a source of variation essential to evolve new defense strategies and adapt to the environment. Stem rust disease in Scots pine has a negat...

Characterization of a Lhcb5 cDNA from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).

Despite extensive studies on the LHC proteins of PSI and PSII (for review, see Jansson, 1994), the detailed polypeptide composition of LHC I and LHC I1 has not been understood until recently. The nature of the Lhcb5 gene product has been one of the major uncertainties, since it has been identified both as the CP26 (or the equivalent complex LHCIIc) polypeptide and one of two CP29 polypeptides (...

Anatomical-based defense responses of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stems to two fungal pathogens.

We investigated the cellular responses of stem tissues of mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees to inoculations with two fungal pathogens. The bark beetle vectored fungus, Leptographium wingfieldii Morelet, induced longer lesions in the bark, stronger swelling of polyphenolic parenchyma cells, more polyphenol accumulation and increased ray parenchyma activity compared with the root rot ...

Growth and Survival Variation among Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Provenances

Tree height, basal diameter, and survival were examined in thirteen-year-old provenance test established by 30 seed sources of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) at two exotic sites of the species in Southern part of Turkey. Variations within provenance and among provenances and relations among the traits were estimated to compare Scots pine provenance and two other native species. Averages of tr...
